Chocolate Pear Spinach Blueberry Immune Boost Smoothie – My New Favorite!

A Complete Breakfast

Since making my major lifestyle change a year ago, green smoothies have been my breakfast of choice. They allow me to have a complete, well-rounded meal that is quick, low glycimic and can even be portable.  My Blendtec blender , which I love because of its smoothie button and Wildside jar that chops up anything and everything I put in it. When I travel I always take my Magic Bullet along because I really can’t imagine a day without a smoothie. Another note is that I do own another blender which seems to work well too if you are looking to move up from the Magic Bullet and can’t afford a high-speed blender. My second home is equipped with a Kitchenaid blender now, I just couldn’t take making smoothies for two in the bullet anymore, and it is the one used for the pictures in this recipe. But if you are looking for a Blendtec or Vitamix be sure and check Costco’s site (Canada or USA), they have the best prices and they do go on sale.

Do I ever get bored with smoothies? Never!

People are always asking me for recipes and I can honestly say that I don’t really use them. I keep my freezer stocked with a variety of fruits and berries including strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, pineapple, mangos etc. I try not eat the same thing two days in a row. The same goes for greens, I will usually have three or more smoothieable greens in my fridge including things like spinach, romaine lettuce, spring mix greens, zucchini and cucumbers being my most common greens. It is also nice to have fresh fruit on hand like pears (I like Bosc the best), bananas, pineapple, melons etc.  The thing is you need to choose fruits that you like and build from there. The most important part of the smoothie, and what makes it a complete meal is the protein.

The most complete protein is whey but in my case it is not an option because my system doesn’t tolerate it since I have a dairy intolerance. Whey will make the fluffiest smoothie by far. There are also soy, hemp and rice proteins. My system does best with rice proteins and my doctor likes me to use Metagenics UltraMeal 360 Plus products because of the low glycemic index, plant sterols and other nutrients it contains but I also use Sunwarrior rice protein as well since it comes in plain and it takes less of it to make a serving, therefore it is more cost-effective. No matter which you choose make sure you have a couple of flavors (Chocolate and Vanilla at least) so you can mix it up with them too. Look for clean products preferably made from non-GMO sourced proteins.

Tips and Tricks: Blender vs. Magic Bullet

When it comes to building your smoothie there is a difference between building it in a traditional blender whether it is a Blendtec, Vitamix or any other blender with the blade on the bottom and in a Magic Bullet. In the Magic Bullet you build it backwards since you will be turning the cup upside down to put it on the blender, so you build the smoothie backwards. What do I mean? I have found that the best way to build a smoothie so that it always blends well is to start with the softest fruits and work to the hardest being at the top. For instance in the case of the smoothie we are making today, the pear is the softest, next is the spinach and last is the frozen fruit, which in this case is the blueberries. But if you are building it in a Magic Bullet cup add the blueberries first and reverse the order of the ingredients.

The other thing is that of course you won’t get as much in the cup as you will in full size blender so you need to cut the quantities down to 1/3 for a regular cup or maybe 1/2 if you have the big Magic Bullet cups.

No matter which type of blender you use the most important tip I can give you is to blend all the fruit and vegetables first until they are smooth before adding your protein powder. This is critical if you use whey protein because if you add it with everything else it will grow to be bigger than the blender since it fluffs up so much. The other reason is to not over process the protein. Over processing can cause a breakdown of the delicate amino acids they contain which are the powerhouse of your protein, and the reason it is added in the first place.

Another note is that if you find that smoothies make you feel too cold, have a cup of tea along with it. There are lots of antioxidants in tea and it will help keep your body temperature up. It’s also another opportunity to get in a few more immune boosters.

My New Favorite Smoothie!

Now that I said I don’t use recipes to make smoothies I’m going to share one of my favorite combinations. If you are looking for lots recipes check my green smoothie category, I have listed some great sites there that offer up some really good recipes too.

I first made this when my husband was coming down with a cold and I wanted to boost his immune system up a notch so I added lemon, honey and ginger to the mix and lo and behold it made one awesome smoothie. Now I make it once or twice a week because it is made of things I almost always have on hand.

It also works great with apple instead of pear and the spinach could be changed to be baby romaine or even zucchini without changing the taste very much but this is my favorite combo. Also, if you don’t have chocolate protein powder you could also add cocoa or cacoa powder or even carob to get that chocolate taste but you may want to add a bit more honey since these will boost the bitter taste up a bit.

Easy-As Recipes - Gluten Free Main Meals Cookbook (Easy-As Gluten Free Recipes)

Easy-As Recipes – Gluten Free Main Meals Cookbook (Easy-As Gluten Free Recipes) by Nicole Hayes (Kindle Edition -Aug 26, 2012)

This book proves gluten free cooking doesn’t need to be difficult or boring. There is something in this list of delicious gluten-free recipes for everyone – stir fries and pies, cook-ahead meals and quick dishes. Most do not require expert cooking skills, just an ability to follow directions and some basic kitchen equipment – a few pans, a frying pan, grill, oven, wooden spoon, knife, and measuring jug – not much more. Some do require you to use a food processor, but even with these it is possible to get the same result in some other way – although perhaps with a little more effort.

Celiac Disease In Children: A Practical Guide For Parents Book No1 (How To Wave Goodbye To The Wheat & Gluten Gremlins) (Celiac Disease In Children: Gluten Free Recipes For Kids)

Celiac Disease In Children: A Practical Guide For Parents Book No1 (How To Wave Goodbye To The Wheat & Gluten Gremlins) (Celiac Disease In Children: Gluten Free Recipes For Kids) by Lynda Fallon (Kindle Edition -May 2, 2012)

Many years prior to being diagnosed, my niece was displaying several symptoms and the major one was a failure to gain weight. Unfortunately, the remedy proposed to counteract this problem at the time was to increase her intake of any foods that would help bulk her out and her mum was encouraged to feed her plenty of pizza, bread, cake and biscuits. I can actually hear many of you gasping in horror. Well, as was to be expected, the failure to gain weight did not dissipate and many other symptoms increased. Blood tests were taken together with a small intestine biopsy and celiac disease was diagnosed. Once the gluten free diet was introduced the changes to my niece’s health, energy and growth were seen in a surprisingly short period of time.

Children suffering from Celiac disease have a rather tough time. While the condition itself is not painful, given that proper treatment is administered, having to deal with a restricted diet can be frustrating and annoying.

Sticking to a gluten-free diet is challenging at any age. It’s a good thing though that a lot of the healthy food items that people are encouraged to eat more of, like fruits and vegetables, do not contain the offending protein.

Celiac Disease In Children: How To Prepare Fast, Easy & Nutritious GLUTEN FREE BREAKFASTS (Celiac Disease In Children: Gluten Free Recipes For Kids)

Celiac Disease In Children: How To Prepare Fast, Easy & Nutritious GLUTEN FREE BREAKFASTS (Celiac Disease In Children: Gluten Free Recipes For Kids) by Lynda Fallon (Kindle Edition -May 2, 2012)

We are all told continuously how breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the one that certainly shouldn’t be skipped, but in all honesty we probably all feel it is the easiest to skip and if it isn’t skipped it is usually the most hurried during the week.
We are all busy and most of us have trouble getting out of bed so everything is left until last minute. This applies to Mum, Dad and the kids. In a busy household it is usually a time of hustle and bustle, shoving and pushing, shouting and crying. The perfect harmonious breakfast is a luxury, usually only seen at weekends because during the week William can’t find his homework and what’s more is in too much of a strop to look for it. Alice is still in her wardrobe trying to decide if her socks match her hairband, Max doesn’t want to go to school and Florence…Where is Florence and what can she safely have for her breakfast that is fast, filling and nutritious before embarking on her long journey to school?
The breakfast staple and reliable self-serve fast food has now become a nightmare for the celiac child! Or has it?

Paleo Diet Solution : Lose Weight The Easy And Healthy Way With Fat Burning Foods Paleo Diet Guide With Recipes And Meal Plans

Paleo Diet Solution : Lose Weight The Easy And Healthy Way With Fat Burning Foods Paleo Diet Guide With Recipes And Meal Plans by Sofia D’Andrea (Kindle Edition -Sep 14, 2012)

This book is not only created to provide a clearer explanation of what the Paleo diet is but also highlights the long term advantages of adopting this diet plan. Though we have made significant technological advancements over the years we have not been as successful in improving the way we eat. In fact, to be daring it can be said that it has gotten worse.
Processed foods and food filled with preservatives and additives is wreaking havoc on our system. The best way to correct this (which the book clearly states) is to go back to the way in which our ancestors ate. Eat things fresh and cut down on the use of salt and also eat more lean protein and balance it with fresh vegetables and fruits.
Other types of diets can be pretty hard to follow especially those geared to weight loss. A lot of them end up being harmful in the long run. Many say diets don’t work but the Paleo method is simply a way to modify ones diet by cutting out the unhealthy components and allowing the body to get back in peak condition from the cellular level. The best way to learn about it is to get the facts.

On one hand, powerful science and millions of success stories attest to the amazing fat loss and health benefits of low carb diets, like Atkins and Protein Power. Indeed, carbohydrate restriction may just be a silver bullet capable of preventing or reversing dozens of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even cancer.
On the other hand, cutting carbs kinda sucks! :)
Admit it. All our favorite treats are carb-filled: donuts, cakes, piping hot oven fresh bread, etc. These foods are not only scrumptious, but they’re also superabundant, cheap and easy to prepare.

You can still download the written portion but unless you have an Apple device you will not be able to hear or view the extra content. It will be a much larger download as well so be aware.

I just checked I have over 900 free Kindle eBooks in my collection! It is a great way to find great recipes and healthy lifestyle information. Many of these are in my own library but I will admit I haven’t read them all. There may be some that don’t follow my  dietary restrictions but sometimes a quick ingredient swap is all they need. I look at it as great reference and they provide me with great ideas and information. Sometimes I just save the recipes I like from these free eBooks to my database for quick reference later.

Don’t have a Kindle? No problem, just set up one of Kindle’s Free Reading Apps like Kindle for PC and save them to your computer, or if you don’t have the extra storage space, there is also Kindle Cloud Reader where you can keep them online. You will have to first set up an Amazon account if you don’t already have one but it’s free and easy too.

I will be checking the post randomly over the weekend to try and keep it up to date. I usually seem to start out with 50+ free eBooks but things can change in minutes.  I guess the quicker you are, the more likely they are to still be free. Sorry if they changed the pricing, sometimes it happens so fast I can’t even believe it!

Please check before downloading to make sure the eBooks are still free, the prices can change at any time. Each picture and title are direct links to the eBook on Amazon.com.

In case you’re wondering…no I don’t make any money if you click on the books, I just want to provide you with a great resource of FREE healthy lifestyle information. If you find some you really like, take the time to leave a rating and review so that others know it’s worth owning and reading. Even better… leave a comment below!

Enjoy!!

Magic Bullet Green Smoothie – Mango, Blueberry, Zucchini

Make a decent lunch a great lunch!

There are two things I do to pump up my lunches: green smoothie and juice. Both are great ways to add more healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet, or can be a meal on it’s own if you add protein. The best part is they taste good and aren’t hard to drink. I always have a green smoothie with protein to start my day and this smoothie could just as easily be a breakfast.

Today’s smoothie was to accompany my reheated leftover turkey stir fry from the night before. Kind of like a smoothie side dish. Not a bad meal but any time food is reheated it loses some of it’s nutrients. Which is why I mixed up this simple smoothie to accompany it.  And yes, I made it with my Magic Bullet and not my Blendtec blender. One benefit to that is that you always know how much you’re going to make, it has to fit in the cup. The other is that the Magic Bullet travels well and makes pretty good travel smoothies. But the Blendtec will always make a smoother smoothie faster.

Zucchini doesn’t make a very green smoothie but it is incredibly healthy and has other benefits like being easily camouflaged by the fruit making it a great way to hide extra vegetables. Great for kids.

Single Serving Mango Blueberry Zucchini Smoothie

by HealthyNewDawn’s D Valcourt

Ingredients:

1/2 of a fresh Mango

1/2 cup of frozen Blueberries

fresh Zucchini to fill the cup (cubed and seeded if necessary)

Coconut Water (or other fluids like water, cold herbal tea, yogurt etc)

1 serving of Protein Powder of choice ( optional but important if it is to be a meal)

Method:

  1. Add Mango, Blueberry and Zucchini into a Magic Bullet cup. Order is not really important here since the ingredients all have similar textures.
  2. Fill with Coconut Water ( or other liquid) until glass is about half full.
  3. Screw on the 4 prong blade attachment and blend until smooth.
  4. Unscrew blades and add protein powder now if using.
  5. Remove blades, add a drink collar and enjoy!

Tip: Never over blend protein powders it can damage them, or in the case of whey, can make your smoothie too fluffy. Always add protein powders as a final step to building any smoothie.

Gylcemic Index (GI) of Breakfast Foods – Typical Foods vs. Green Smoothies

“The glycemic index or GI is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates in food on blood sugar levels. It estimates how much each gram of available carbohydrate (total carbohydrate minus fiber) in a food raises a person’s blood glucose level following consumption of the food, relative to consumption of glucose. Glucose has a glycemic index of 100, by definition, and other foods have a lower glycemic index. Glycemic index is defined for each type of food, independent of the amount of food consumed.” - Wikipedia

“The body regulates the levels of blood glucose to avoid the detrimental effects of a prolonged high, or low, blood sugar by releasing hormones like insulin and other chemicals. High blood glucose causes insulin production, which helps the glucose move out of the blood stream and into fat cells and muscles. Low blood glucose causes the release of other chemicals and hormones, which reduce the effectiveness of insulin and help bring blood glucose back to normal levels.

Studies show:
  • After a high glycemic breakfast, children continued to consume 53% more calories before supper-time than children eating a low glycemic meal.
  • Studies show more weight loss on low glycemic-calorie restricted diets than high glycemic diets of the same calories.

It does seem that high glycemic diets may increase appetite, food intake, fat deposition and overwork the cells that produce insulin. High glycemic foods may therefore increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In light of the evidence produced so far, it would seem prudent to increase intake of low glycemic foods.” - glycemicindex.ca

I created this chart from many sources to be able to show you why our typical breakfast foods really are not doing us a favor when it comes to our blood sugar. This is our most important meal of the day! You have fasted all night to get up and give yourself a big dose of sugar in one form or another. No wonder we need coffee and are hungry again in no time. Besides that it makes us fat.

Glycemic Index (GI) Chart of Breakfast Foods – Typical Foods vs. Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are made from whole foods and for the most part are all foods with low to medium GI. Only two of the foods listed under green smoothies are considered high glycemic  but if you check  a bit deeper, there are health benefits to both of them that out weigh the GI issue. You’ll notice I haven’t included the GI for protein powders, that’s because it varies depending on type and brand but one thing they have in common is that they are almost always considered low GI.

Just imagine what happens to your blood sugar levels when you have cereal with milk, toast with jam and a glass of orange juice for breakfast.

Free Green Smoothie Recipes

Kicking cereal and carb rich foods in the morning was the best thing I ever did for my health.

No matter where I go someone is asking me for recipes so they can try too. It’s simple to me, I buy fruits I like both frozen and raw then combine the fruit with a variety of greens, and I make sure I always add protein to complete the meal. Everyday I mix it up in order to give my foods a bit of rotation and it never gets boring. If you ate it today skip it tomorrow. To make the best smoothie,  try and keep the glycemic index of the foods down, watch the pH of the mix and try to optimize the Omega-3 values too.
If that all seems too much, here’s are some links to free smoothie recipes to get you started. I don’t encourage adding any sweeteners to your drinks. If you use flavored protein powders, you will be getting plenty of extra sugar, usually in the form of fructose. I will always add protein powder to my smoothies (my preference is Sunwarrior) to make it a complete meal at breakfast. Most of these recipes won’t talk about protein powder but my advice is to add what is considered to be a portion size for the protein powder you are using, but not until you have blended out the smoothie first. This way you maintain the integrity of the protein and preventing it from becoming too fluffy (especially with whey)

I’ll keep adding sites as I find good sources of recipes. Also don’t forget to check my free eBook postings you may find some there too.
Hope you find a few you like!
